Relatives say judge should reject planemaker’s proposed deal with US justice department and seek much higher fine

Families of some of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes said on Wednesday a US judge should reject the planemaker’s proposed plea deal with the US Department of Justice and said the government should seek a much higher fine.

On 24 July, the global company finalized an agreement to plead guilty to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge and pay between $243.6m and $487m after breaching a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement.

Paul Kiernan struggles to talk about what happened on 10 March 2019. He walked his partner, Joanna Toole, to a taxi, put her bag in the back and kissed her goodbye. He told her he loved her, and asked her to let him know when she landed safely. The message never came.

Toole’s flight, Ethiopian Airlines 302, crashed minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa killing all 157 people on board.

In the 1840s, a prominent health notion of the time – the “miasma theory” – suggested that bad smells and bad air led to people contracting diseases such as cholera and the Black Death. By the end of the decade, more than 50,000 deaths had been recorded in England and Wales.

In 1849 John Snow – a young physician considered one of the founders of modern epidemiology – had become sceptical of the prevailing theory and suggested that contaminated water may instead be the main form of transmission.
